It is safe to say that October 26, 2012 will be Microsoft day as two of its most highly anticipated products will make their debut - the Microsoft Surface tablet and Windows 8.  The Microsoft Surface is a powerful and ergonomically friendly tablet whose design creates great use of use for both traditional PC and tablet users.   Windows 8 is the next generation windows operating system that boasts of a dramatically new user-interface that creates extends ease a of use for multiple devices, be they touchscreen or traditional input devices such a mouse and keyboard.

Microsoft Surface

Everything about Microsoft Surface makes the ideal tablet for just about everyone.  First Microsoft will offer a standard Surface (Windows RT) and a more advanced Surface (Windows Pro).    The Surface (Windows RT) will be for user who are seeking to perform basic tasks such on the go.  Some of its specifications are:

Windows 8

Two of the biggest selling points of the Windows 8 operating system has been its ultra user-friendly interface, the Metro UI, and it’s promise of better performance and memory usage.  The Metro UI looks familiar to many who use windows-based devices.  For those who would rather the traditional desktop, Windows 8 also provides a slightly updated version of their traditional desktop.

Memory usage was the biggest criticism of  its predecessor, Windows Vista.  After Vista, users found a happy medium with Windows  7 which has a similar look and feel to Vista but much better performance, especially with regard to memory usage.  To promote even better memory usage,  you will be able to sync all your information to cloud after signing into your Microsoft account.

Microsoft’s main goal is to continue a traditional of universal applicability. Microsoft  states:

“Windows 8 will run on both x86 and ARM architecture, enabling an even wider range of devices that run Windows. The Windows 8 operating system will include the Windows Store, an online application marketplace. This marketplace will benefit our developer and partner ecosystems by providing access to a large customer base and will benefit Windows users by providing centralized access to certified applications.”

Microsoft has mastered the art of intuitive use as well as universal applicability. This fact is highlight with its newest upcoming products who embody traits. This will allow Microsoft to continue to stay competitive into the future.

Tablet check: Google, Kindle, Microsoft (Video)

The first day of school is fast approaching. Right now is the time to help your child to lighten to their load by getting them a brand new tablet PC.  Just two years ago, the practicality of every student owning a tablet PC seemed to me a figment of  the imagination. It was a very lofty and questionable goal during a time when the $499 and up iPad dominated the markets. However, now the tablet market is highly competitive with the introduction of cheaper and slightly smaller tablets.

Google Nexus

The Google Nexus is one of the most affordable tablets on the market. At a starting price of $199, it has a 7 inch 1280 x 800 HD display, scratch-resistant Corning glass, 1.2MP front-facing Camera, NFC (Android Beam), Volume Controls, speaker and software keys as it’s basic features. Wireless connectivity includes WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth.  Other features of the Nexus includes a microphone, accelerometer, GPS, magnetometer, and gyroscope. The Google Nexus puts the best of Google at your fingertip by providing Google Play and Google apps such as Gmail, Chrome, Google + and YouTube.

Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire set the tablet PC industry ablaze with it’s affordability and capability.  Using an Android Operating system and a 1-GHz Texas Instruments OMAP  4430 dual-core processor, the Kindle Fire is 7.5” x 4.7 x 0.45” with a 7 inch multi-touch display. Connectivity supports public and private WiFi Networks.  This device has an 8 GB storage capacity that can support 80 apps or 10 movies or 800 songs or 6,000 books as well as free cloud storage for all Amazon content.

Microsoft Surface

There is as much buzz surrounding the Microsoft Surface as there is about the possibility of an iPad Mini. The Microsoft Surface is a tablet  that looks like the ultimate hybrid of a tablet, a laptop, and a netbook.  With a kickstand and pressure-sensitive cover that’s also a keyboard, this tablet’s design uses the ergonomic ease of the laptop and netbook as well the keyboard design to make transitioning from traditional PC use to tablet use a more natural process.  To further meet the goal of being as viable a workstation  as a traditional pc or laptop, the Surface will be equipped with Microsoft Office as well Windows 8 apps.

At 10.6 mm, the Surface will be about the size of an iPad or netbook and two inches larger than the Google Nexus and Kindle Fire.  It has two cameras, one for formal video conferencing and the other for informal video conferencing.

Back-to-School

These tablets will be in high demand for the Fall 2012 school year. To find out more about of each of about them, visit:

School Performance Scores Reveal 8 Academically Unacceptable Schools

Louisiana State Department of Education (LDOE) 2011 School Performance Schools Scores revealed 48 schools across the state have been added to its Academically Unacceptable List of Schools.  According to the LDOE’s list, eight of the 48 academically unacceptable schools, eight schools in East Baton Rouge Parish have found to be academically unacceptable for one year (AUS 1) or 2 consecutive years (AUS 2):

AUS 1

Belaire High School – 64.4

Broadmoor Middle School – 63.5

Melrose Elementary School – 64.4

East Baton Rouge Laboratory Academy – 23

Capitol Elementary – 61.3

Inspire Charter Academy (Natl. Heritage Acad.) – 64.2

AUS 2

Delmont Elementary School – 60.1

Mayfair Middle School – 58.5

No schools in East Baton Rouge Parish were found to be academically unacceptable three consecutive years.  The LDOE states, “more Louisiana students than ever are grade-level proficient. But a five-point boost in the minimum mark needed to avoid the Academically Unacceptable School (AUS) label placed more schools on the state’s 2011 AUS list, which was released by LDOE today.” The East Baton Rouge Parish School System made available many tutoring options such as its Elementary/Middle School Summer Program for students Approaching/Approaching, Approaching/Unsatisfactory or Unsatisfactory / Unsatisfactory in ELA and Math in one or more subjects.   In addition to the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, The State Library of Louisiana in collaboration with the Tutor.com has made HomeworkLa.org available for free math, science, social studies, and English tutoring.  HomeworkLa.org can be accessed through school website as well the East Baton Rouge School System’s website.

The Louisiana State Department of Education’s main goal is to motivate schools and students to do more than just enough to pass.  In addition to making options such as school choice available to parents whose children are in the districts of failing schools, the LDOE has also created websites such as Louisiana Virtual School for high school students and LouisianaPASS.org to help students prepare for LEAP, iLEAP and GEE.  LouisianaPASS.org is accessible through school websites as well the East Baton Rouge School System’s website.

“We realize today’s news is unwelcomed. But we haven’t lost sight of our progress and the effort being put forth by educators across our state to ensure our students have the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in school and beyond,” Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) President Penny Dastugue said. “What BESE did when we made the decision to raise standards is say ’It’s not acceptable that more than half the students in a school are performing below grade level. Our students deserve more from us.’ Our commitment and challenge now at the state level is to work with schools and districts to get every school in the state over the bar.”
